Coronation Street tour down under 1966: Writing history and questions of scale — Australian Historical Association annual conference hosted by The Australian National University

Coronation Street tour down under 1966: Writing history and questions of scale (170)

Adrian Schober

The paper explores questions of scale in relation to the writing of local history: in this case, the 1966 goodwill promotional visit to Australia by three stars of the British television serial Coronation Street. The stars drew substantial crowds in Melbourne and particularly Adelaide, inspiring scenes of adulation that were compared with the Beatles' historic visit to Australia two years earlier. While possessing the scale to be considered historically and culturally significant, the tour is largely forgotten to Australian history. In reconstructing the event using a multiplicity of sources, including newspapers, magazines, TV guides and photographs held in state collections, the paper addresses the challenges faced by the local historian: the availability of sources, access to living witnesses, gaps in the historical record, unresolved discrepancies, and the fallibility of memory. In so far as scale has shaped the methodology and approach, the paper considers determinations of historical significance, reference points for history, and the geographical parameters of the research. It further considers the implied audience for the research, genre, form and register, and the forum for publication.
