Fifty years on from the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City (346)

Bruce Coe

The year 2018 is a significant anniversary year for sports historians. Fifty years after the Olympic Games in Mexico City, I will explore the Czech athletes’ reactions to the Prague Spring, Mexican student unrest prior to the commencement of the Games, at the height of the Cold War East Germany competing as a separate nation for the first time and what that meant for the future, Black Power protests and the emergence of African runners on the athletic track.
