Was Federation integrating or fracturing? The impact of the 1901 customs union (162)

William Coleman

The paper examines previously initialised  data on intra Australian and international trade before and after the establishment of the Federation customs union of 1901.The data suggests the union discouraged the exports of the larger states to the rest of the world, while discouraging their exports to the smaller states. Conversely, the union appears to have encouraged the exports of the smaller states to the rest of the world, while discouraging their exports to larger states.
