Practical Advice for the Non-Academic Job Search — Australian Historical Association annual conference hosted by The Australian National University

Practical Advice for the Non-Academic Job Search (553)

Melanie Burkett , Blake Singley , Evan Smith , Christina Parolin

With academic jobs becoming ever rarer, more and more History PhDs are considering their options outside of the academy. How do you translate your research degree in a non-academic space? Where do you even begin to look for jobs outside the professoriate? This roundtable will help HDRs and ECRs broaden their thinking about non-academic careers. First, we’ll hear a report from the ANU research team behind the study ‘Tracking Trends in Industry Demand for Australia’s Advanced Research Workforce’, a project which used Machine Learning to analyse job ads in order to better understand Australian industry demand for highly skilled researchers. Then, a panel of PhDs who successfully transitioned into full-time, non-academic employment will discuss their experiences searching for, applying for, and obtaining non-academic jobs.
