Sweet Country, released on 25 January 2018 and set in the sweat-soaked world of livestock, grog and spinifex of the 1920s Northern Territory, is a visceral, demanding, and powerful film – and one that has generated discussion. This session ponders Warwick Thornton’s film and its themes of law, justice, and race-relations by offering a paper on the history-making of this film followed by a roundtable discussion. Delegates are encouraged to attend the screening of Sweet Country at the National Film and Sound Archive, 4 July 2018, at 7pm.

Martin Thomas is the author or editor of eight books including The Artificial Horizon; The Many Worlds of R. H. Mathews; and Expedition into Empire. He has produced numerous works for radio and has recently been working on a film, Etched in Bone (Red Lily Productions/Ronin Films), about the theft and repatriation of Aboriginal human remains. He teaches in the School of History at ANU and is currently an investigator on Heritage in the Limelight, a study of magic lanterns funded by the Australian Research Council.

Adjunct Assistant Professor Tjanara Goreng Goreng is a Wakka Wakka Wulli Wulli Traditional Owner from Central Queensland. Tjanara taught Indigenous Studies at the University of Canberra before completing her PhD on Sacred and Visionary leadership at ANU.

Andrew Pike is a film distributor, film historian, documentary film-maker and exhibitor. With Ross Cooper, he wrote Australian Film 1900-1977, (Oxford University Press). His films as director include Angels of War (1982) about Papua New Guinea during World War II, The Chifleys of Busby Street (2008), Emily in Japan (2010) and Message From Mungo, co-directed with Ann McGrath. He is managing director of Ronin Films.
