The trench periodicals of the First World War have a rich historiographical literature, but the various troop and unit periodicals produced during the Second World War have not been as well studied. This paper will take a closer look at some of the Australian troop periodicals produced during the Second World War. In particular, I will examine how the memory and language of the First World War was revived in these periodicals, and the extent to which these periodicals began to craft new ideas about the ‘digger’ identity and mobilised a new vocabulary to reflect new experiences of war.
