'War. War never changes': Military history, video games, and accidental 'historians' (497)

These days, it seems like every second video game released expressly deals with war. Developers now take great care to recreate an accurate battlefield, an accurate set of weapons and accurate combat to appeal to their audience. More and more there is an emphasis on drawing on historical events to make these games feel more real. But what effect does this have on the understanding and consumption of history by the general public? Using case studies of Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed: Origins and Activision's Call of Duty: WWII I will explore what the intersection of gaming and history means for the discipline and how this can be utilised to educate.
